Financial Transparency
This year we want to ensure members are able to fully understand our membership and event pricing. We are breaking down our costs and charges below to enable you to do so. If you have any questions or concerns about being able to afford the club charges please contact our treasurer or welfare officer.
Membership Cost
This year you will notice we have increased our membership base price. This is to reflect our efforts to become financially sustainable and stable as a club, as well as increasing our pay to our coaches to reflect their expertise and efforts. The majority of our income as a club will go towards covering our coaching costs for the year, other funding will go towards social events and equipment.
All of our coaches hold a 4th or 5th Dan certificate in addition to formal coaching qualifications and other qualifications such as refereeing and judging. To reach this level of expertise requires a minimum of 8 years of continuous training and efforts. Our coaches go above and beyond, working outside of their teaching hours to help out at events and plan the year which needs to be accounted for in their pay.
The majority of taekwondo clubs are unable to cover all areas of taekwondo with balance, at KCL we offer equal amounts of coaching for sparring and poomsae - poomsae specifically is rarely offered with as many hours as we provide.
For a complete beginner you will be entitled to join the master led essentials class and the student led classes. By the end of the first term you should also be entitled to join in master led sparring and poomsae.
We have included a table below showing the number of hours of coaching available to you and the cost per hour if you attended only master led sessions, or master led and student led sessions for both beginners and experienced members.
Sceanario | Hours of Master Led | Cost per hour Master Led | Hours of Student Led | Hours Total Offered | Cost per Hour Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Complete Beginner | 72 | £1.25 | 64 | 136 | £0.66 |
Experienced | 112 | £0.88 | 64 | 176 | £0.51 |
For comparison we have included prices of other London based taekwondo clubs below:
Club 1 - £8 per 2 hour class , 2 classes offered a week (£4 per hour)
Club 2 - £85 per month, 2 1.5 hour classes offered a week (£7.08 per hour)
Club 3 - £90 joining fee plus £60 per month, 3 1 hour classes offered a week (£5.62 per hour)
Competition Cost
This year we are modifying our approach to competitions based on feedback. Notably we will be paying for our coaches to attend and help to coach at events, something that was highly requested last yet. We will also be using public transport where possible to offer the club and the members a substantial financial saving and environmental impact.
The SU provides cost coverage for certain aspects of competitions depending on if they are BUCS or Non-BUCS events, and providing that the student competing is representing KCL. A table of competition costs the SU assists with are included in the table below, each column represents savings per competitor.
Please note you will NOT be charged for any subsidiaries the SU provides. Any prices we charge will take into account the SU subsidiary amounts.
Item | BUCS - KCL Subsidiary | Non BUCS - KCL Subsidiary |
---|---|---|
Entry Fee | 100% up to £100 | 50% |
Accomodaton | £50 for first night
£25 for second night | £20 |
Transport | £25 | £10 |
Items that are NOT covered by the SU and must be made up by the club and members as a collective are: coaching costs, additional accommodation costs, additional transport costs, any fines the club incurs.
Items that are NOT covered by the club and need to be sorted individually at events: food and drink, transport between accommodation and venue, affiliation costs.
Notably to compete in BUCS you will need to purchase both a BUCS pass and a BSTF competitor pass.
Below is a table of example costs of attending competitions, we have made this table based on assumptions that :
- All required affiliation fees have already been paid
- Event entry is £40 a head and £25 per extra event
- Transport costs £40 for a return journey
- Accommodation costs £50 per night.
