I've never tried a martial art before, can I join?We are very welcoming to beginners! Our classes are designed to teach you the basics and open up more opportunities as you progress. Please join Master Stevens essentials class and join our student led sessions for appropriate training. If you have concerns or queries please contact our captains!
-
I have prior martial arts experience, can I join at a different belt level and access higher classes?Taekwondo belts are given during gradings, you can not automatically be given a belt without a grading however you may progress faster. Coaches will assess your skills during our basics sessions and will be able to direct you to the classes which will be most appropriate for your skill level. Please check with coaches/captains before attending master led poomsae/sparring.
-
What equipment do I need to join?To join you just need yourself and a dobok that you can buy independently or through the club. We have protective gear, paddles and kick shields to borrow during sessions.
-
What equipment do I need to compete? For poomsae just yourself and your dobok. For sparring it depends on category: B and C Class will have to bring their own/borrow full protective gear. This is : Helmet Clear/White Gum Shield (not available to borrow) Hogu (Body Protector) Forearm Guards Shin Gaurds Groin Guards Optional Gloves/Socks A Class will be given electronic equipment at the event, but MUST BRING THEIR OWN ELECTRONIC SOCKS & CLEAR/WHITE GUM SHIELD, the club does not have spares of these so must be purchased or borrowed in advance. Please ensure you have the correct brand for the competition. If you are unsure please contact the coaches.
-
Can I purchase equipment through the club?Yes, we will do equipment and uniform orders at a limited number of time points throughout the year. Please contact the captains if you wish to purchase anything through the club.
-
I don't want to compete, can I still join and support?Of course! Whilst we encourage competitions no member is forced to compete, you are welcome at all regular trainings. In addition you can support at competitions by either volunteering to help run the day and learn to referee, or by just showing up and cheering people on! Many of our competitors chose this route for their first event, and later chose to compete after having seen how it all works.
-
How much does it cost to compete?Competitions where you represent KCL will always be partially subsidised by the SU. Please see our financial transparency page for more details on this. Each event will be priced differently dependant on travel costs, accommodation costs (if needed), and the entry cost of the events. For some like BUCS and BT , you will also need a annual license.
-
What support can I expect competing? We hold regular poomsae and sparring classes and may be able to offer additional sessions in the run up to events. Coaches and captains can offer support to guide your training schedule and provide feedback. Our welfare officer is on hand for any wellbeing support you may need. At the event we tend to have a great crowd of spectators to cheer you on, typically poomsae and sparring do not occur at the same time so the different specialities can support whilst not competiting themselves. If you are sparring you must have a coach for your fight, this may be one of our club coaches or a senior member. If you have a strong preference please contact the coaches and captains prior to the event. If you are competing in poomsae a coach mat side is not a requirement, however we try to provide this wherever possible. This again may be a captain, coach or senior member. If these are not available you are welcome to have a team mate to bow to and keep you grounded during the event. Again if you have a strong preference please contact the coaches and captains prior to the event. If you are competing outside of the KCL circuit and would like support please contact the captains. If you would like more individualised support please check out our Mentor Program !
